Linux Users Group (CWE-LUG)
An OpenSource workshop and small projects group
meeting in the Central West End neighborhood of Saint Louis, Missouri
Goals:
- To advocate the use of Free/Libre/OpenSource Software (FLOSS) on all platforms, including Windows, Mac OS/X, Linux, and BSD
- To educate people through forums, meetings, and mailing lists about FLOSS
- To support users, advocates, and educators of FLOSS
- To socialize and have fun
Next meeting:
- Date: Sunday, August 3rd (note: 1st Sunday)
- Time: 12:00-4:00pm
- Location: ByteWorks at 4100 Shenandoah, St. Louis, MO 63110
[Google Maps]
All meetings are free and open to the public, although we do accept donations.
In general, we try to meet on one of the first two Sundays of the month from 12:00-4:00pm.
Future meeting dates will be:
- Sunday, September 7th - (1st Sunday -- tentative)
The first and last half-hour will be for setup and tear down,
respectively. But the rest of the time is for in-person help,
troubleshooting, installations, show-and-tell, demonstrations, and
expressing personal opinions on Linux, *BSD, FLOSS (yes, even FLOSS under Windows),
and related topics.
The CWE-LUG is grateful to Contegix for providing hosting and bandwidth for distributing FLOSS via BitTorrent.

A few of the things that will be at the meetings:
- networked computers both wired and wireless
- 10, 100, 10/100 network switches
- CDs (a variety of Linux, *BSD, and OSS for Windows and OS X
- CD burning ( bring your own blank CD-R, CD-RW, or $2/CD to cover costs)
- ad hoc demonstrations of Linux applications
- installation, troubleshooting, and tech-help
Of course, we can always use spare equipment: power strips, extension
cords, hubs/switches/routers, ethernet cable, network cards, memory,
monitors, etc. So if you have extra and are willing to share for a few
hours, please bring them. Just be sure to label them so we know to whom
they belong at the end of the day ... unless you don't mind making the
donation. :-)
If you want to do a fresh installation, I recommend the following:
- wipe the hard disk clean of any existing OS, or have a spare
drive. Otherwise you will spend most of the time trying to get that
other OS to play nicely, which is not a good way to spend the few short
hours.
- bring all necessary hardware: computer, monitor, keyboard, mice, cables, etc.
- installation media: floppy, CDs, network card. While we may have
these items, if you bring it, you are guaranteed to have it.
ByteWorks is located at
4100 Shenandoah, St. Louis, MO 63110,
just two blocks East of the MO Botanical Gardens and two blocks North of Tower Grove Park.
[Google Maps]
ByteWorks has a number of ammenities, including a classroom with computers,
tables, chairs, power, and unrestricted Internet connection (wired and wireless).
There's also Thurman Grill & Provisions across the street and South Grand within a few minutes drive.
So, if you are new to Linux or FLOSS and need some help, or are a guru and
want to help out, then bring your boxes, your questions, your latest
gadget, your war stories, or anything else and enjoy a few hours with a
few of your closest tech-minded friends.
